Vaud Canton Introduces Stricter Malus for High-Polluting Cars Starting 2026
As of January 1, 2026, motorists in the Swiss canton of Vaud will face higher vehicle taxes for the most polluting cars. The surcharge (malus) for highly polluting vehicles will rise from 25% to 40%, in line with the 2023 law on vehicle and boat taxes (LTVB). An amendment passed in late 2025 could potentially push this to 50% for certain categories, aiming to generate additional revenue while encouraging greener choices.

The 2023 law introduced a bonus-malus system based on CO₂ emissions: low-emission vehicles can receive discounts up to 90%, while high emitters face surcharges up to 50%. Previously, the government applied only a 25% malus, but recent budget debates led to this increase.
Green deputy David Raedler, who proposed the amendment supported by the left and Green Liberals, emphasized that the measure targets only the most polluting vehicles – typically heavy, powerful, or older models costing around CHF 100,000 or more. “This won’t affect the middle class,” he stated, as everyday family cars are largely spared.
Political Controversy and Opposition from the Right
The right-wing parties, including the PLR and UDC, criticize the hike, warning of burdens on families, farmers, and businesses. Laurence Cretegny, PLR deputy and president of TCS Vaud, argued that not just luxury cars but also practical vehicles for families and professionals could be impacted. The UDC plans to challenge the measure in early 2026 with a motion to lower the maximum surcharge.
Details on exact vehicle categories affected will be announced by the Vaud State Council in early 2026, before invoices are sent. Calculate Your 2026 Vaud Car Tax Easily
