How Swiss Car Tax is Calculated: The Formula Explained

Switzerland has no federal vehicle tax — each of the 26 cantons sets its own formula. Most cantons use one or more of the following factors:

  • Engine power (kW) — the most common basis, used by Zurich, Bern, Aargau and others
  • Engine displacement (cc) — used by some older cantonal systems
  • Vehicle weight (kg) — used by cantons such as Valais and Ticino
  • CO₂ emissions — used as a bonus/malus modifier in several cantons to incentivise low-emission vehicles
  • Vehicle type — passenger car, van, motorcycle, campervan each have different rates

The typical formula is: Annual tax = Base rate × (kW or kg) × cantonal coefficient. Electric vehicles receive a discount of 25–50% in most cantons.

Frequently Asked Questions: Swiss Car Tax

When is car tax due in Switzerland?

Car tax is billed annually by the cantonal motor vehicle office, usually at the start of the calendar year or when you first register the vehicle. Most cantons allow payment in one or two instalments.

Do electric cars pay vehicle tax in Switzerland?

Yes, but at a reduced rate. Most cantons apply a 50% discount on vehicle tax for fully electric cars. Geneva and Basel-Stadt offer up to 60% off. Plug-in hybrids typically receive a smaller discount of 25–30% depending on the canton.

Is car tax deductible in Switzerland?

If you use the vehicle for professional purposes and declare actual costs in your tax return, the annual vehicle tax may be deductible as a business expense. For private use, it is generally not deductible at the federal level, but cantonal rules vary.

What happens if I move canton?

You must re-register your vehicle in your new canton within 14 days of moving. You will receive a new number plate and be billed at the new canton’s tariff from the registration date. The old canton refunds any prepaid tax pro-rata.

Can I pay Swiss car tax monthly?

A few cantons offer monthly direct debit options, but most bill annually or semi-annually. Check with your Strassenverkehrsamt for available payment plans.

Geneva Car Tax Calculator — How Vehicle Tax Works in Canton Geneva

Geneva (GE) uses a cylinder capacity + fuel type model to calculate annual vehicle tax. Unlike cantons such as Bern or Aargau which use engine power in kW, Geneva bases its calculation on engine displacement (cm³). Petrol and diesel vehicles pay a higher base rate; electric vehicles receive a 60% discount — one of the most generous EV incentives in Switzerland.

  • Up to 1400 cm³: approx. CHF 250–350 per year
  • 1401–2000 cm³ (e.g. VW Golf, Toyota Corolla): approx. CHF 420–550
  • Over 2000 cm³ (diesel, SUVs): approx. CHF 580–900+
  • Electric vehicles (GE): 60% reduction — approx. CHF 100–200 for a typical EV

Select "Geneva (GE)" in the calculator above for a precise estimate based on your vehicle's cylinder capacity and fuel type.

Calcolo Tassa Circolazione Svizzera 2026
